-
exhausted
-
rainbow - the faintest of rainbows can be seen in the spray of the sprinklers, we loved watching the rainbow change as the sprinklers rotated
-

-
warm evenings - the sustained run of warm stagnant evenings had meant sleep has suffered

heatwave - it’s too hot to sit outside for much of the day. It doesn’t feel right to be spending much of the day in the dark with the blinds closed.
-
happy birthday - music, and drums in particular are a theme at the moment
-
果汁 and 冰激凌 - Ethan and Oscar named these two ‘fruit juice’ and ‘ice cream’

-
Barbican Centre - we came in to town for the LSO Family Concert
-
Scientist at Work - we stood for an hour to watch this scientist perform experiments at the local Polish community fair. Close up, engaging, complete with flames, liquid nitrogen being thrown in the air, and the occasional explosion
-
deserted - midday sun too hot for anyone to be out
-
stickers - pink, purple and Hello Kitty
-
reflection - we’ve had the shutters closed most days this week, feels odd to sit in the dark
-
Shade - the long hot days made any shaded area a place of sanctuary
-
Long Grass - much of the grass has been left uncut. The boys have been having fun using these ears of wall barley as darts.
-
early morning calls with Mum
-
delight - Ethan went on an acorn hunt
-
early sun - I’ve no idea what this flower is called, but the orange gradient is beautiful
-
waiting - We used to cross the railway daily, Oscar hoping the barriers would be shut, me hoping they wouldn’t.
-
timber - the smell of a working timber yard is incredible
-
slow starts - I stood and watched as this man caught his first fish of the season. Moments later there was a second, and third.
-
success | so close
-
banana bread - a parting gift before heading to the airport
-
family haircut - Who knew that a haircut was a great excuse for a day out?

-
on my way - reflections are always fun
-
homework - there is never enough time for homework
-
look up - cameras never quite capture colour the way I experience it. This photo stood out because of the detail visible in the leaves.
-
early piano - Ethan has moved from bashing the keys to playing repeat patterns
-
all smiles - but for how long
-
growth spurt - sun and rain has triggered a growth spurt in anything green
-
a beat - please can I have a drum kit, a real one

-
my happy place

makeshift dark room - Ethan was keen to get involved in cyanotype this week
-
in the shade - a welcome break from the sun

-
setting up camp - I love the way the smoke seemed to linger over the campsite briefly
-
time in the garden - IKEA garden table a worthwhile investment as the weather warms up
-
Alpine House, Kew
-
photography - knowing what to leave behind is just as important as knowing what to take
-
rain - not what you want to see the week you go camping
-
pasta - or “pastas” plural as Ethan calls them - he always eats more when he’s been involved in cooking
-
stretch - sometimes you know they are going to fall, but then they surprise you
-
evening on the water - I miss rowing, wondering if I should join a club
-
cars - try walking from the airport and you quickly realise pedestrians were an afterthought
-
flower of Scotland
-
departure lounge - in the chaos of an airport terminal there are always places to find quiet
-
into the garden - it’s so nice to be spending more time outdoors
-
in flight - we’ve made a start on tidying the garden, the lawn needs work though
-
green - no mow may means the grass is starting to get long
-
working late - a different take on where I spend much of the working day
-
in town - Farringdon station
-
pocket operator, rhythm - surprisingly fun little device
-

sheer delight
-
bike trip - by Sunday Ehtan was really pushing the distance on the bike, he’s loving it
-
family time - it’s rare that we all sit down to watch TV, Shaun the Sheep was a hangover from the long haul flight but it had them all in stitches
-
on the trails - with the trip to nursery nailed, Ethan was keen to try more challenging terrain
-
and the rains came - ’light rain’ it said
-
monopoly deal - we played a couple of games each morning before I started work and it was interesting to see Oscar try to determine my strategy and the counter it with differing strategies of his own
-
art by an orangutan - the boys were super excited to fill their grandparents in on all the weird and wonderful things they saw in China
-
first day on the balance bike - having shown no interest before our trip to China, Ethan has come back determined to learn to ride
-

A view across the frozen lake in Shougang. In the background you can see the iconic Big Air venue from the winter Olympics.
-
Large pipes run between many of the buildings in Shougang. These have been turned into a walkway from which you can view the park.

A photo of our driverless taxi. Sensor arrays are getting smaller but it felt reassuing to see the presence of a roof mounted Lidar sensor.

Buying enough snacks to last us through five days in even colder conditions.

This restaurant does everything to make eating with children easier. If you have to wait, you get a drink and the children get a snack.

I’m glad that work to clear the snow hasn’t completed. It was nice to see parts of the City still blanketed in white.
-
No two roofs are the same. Each corner must tell its own story.
-
Even whilst queuing to enter The Forbidden CIty, you start to get a sense of how big it is.
-
As we got closer to the gates of the Forbidden City, we saw more people in costume.

Bikes and scooters parked outside the mall are still covered in snow.
-
A look back along the platform. Early on a weekday afternoon it isn’t busy.
-
A journey on the Beijing Metro.
-
It always amazes me how many cars are here. You’d never know there was a vast underground carpark that was also full.
-
Heading out into the compound, still covered in snow.
-
Looking over the wall at the temple behind. This was a popular spot for costume photos, but look up above the mele below and you can find relative stillness.
-
Looking towards the Circular Mound with the sun low in the sky.
-
Looking away from the Circular Mound it felt like you had the place to yourself.

-
We loved the 炙子烤羊肉. Roast lamb with lots of cumin, red onion and corriander.
-
A new school has opened locally. Still under construction when were here during the summer, the sheer size of it is something I struggle to comprehend.
-
The remains of an outdoor swimming pool, unused since the opening of a new sports facility, bring back memories of summers in Beijing.
-
Giant rotating scrubbing brushes pushed back and forth along the pavements help keep them free of snow and ice.
-
The work to clear ice and snow from the roads is never ending. As cars wait at the red lights, workers rush out to try and clear more of the ice off the roads in front of them.
-
We stumbled across the local Kyosho Mini-Z Grand Prix. I was amazed at how popular this was. People were hard at work tuning or repairing cars. Others lined up to compete.
-
We gave up trying to make sense of international shoe sizes and instead tried on shoes we found some that fit. My son ended up with a pair of HelloKitty boots.
-
The shopping mall was empty. On a Saturday I’d expect crowds of people sheltering from the cold outside. But there was no one here. The neon lights in this empty arcade had my son dancing around the floor until he realised we were watching him.
-
Beijing is cold. The current. This bike rack is usually a haphasard collection of diskaredbikes. Today they were arranged in a line, untouched. The cold weather has kept people indoors.
